On December 15, 2010 the U.S. Justice Department announced that it had filed suit against BP Exploration & Production, Inc., and eight other companies in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Louisiana. The law suit arises out of the Deepwater Horizon rig fire and subsequent spill of crude oil that affected the Gulf region. A New York Times article on the lawsuit can be found at: http://www.nytimes.com/aponline/2010/12/15/business/AP-US-Gulf-Oil-Spill-Justice.html?_r=2&hp.
The U.S. Department of Justice’s press release can be found at:http://www.justice.gov/iso/opa/ag/speeches/2010/ag-speech-101215.html. The U.S. is seeking to recover billions of dollars under the Oil Pollution and Clean Water Acts arising out of the Gulf oil spill.
