On November 13, 2007 Joseph Maternowski, chair of Hessian & McKasy’s Environmental Law Attorney Practice Group, provided legal analysis of issues related to a Fox 9 news story related to an open dump in Columbia Heights, Minnesota.  The segment discussed the laws that apply to open dumps as well as the impacts of releases from such unpermitted facilities to surface waters, soil and groundwater.

For practical information on what steps you can take to address issues related to open dumping, please see U. S. Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA’s) publication “Illegal Dumping Prevention Guidebook” found at http://www.epa.gov/region5/illegaldumping/
